This Historic building was the entrance to Fort Augustus and later on the main entrance and reception building for St Benedict's Abbey.
It has change surprisingly little on the outside. The monks simply developed the building upwards.
As you approach the Main door now and the long entrance look to your left and see the dip which would have been water in the days of the Fort.
To the right of the entrance you see what appears to be a blocked up wondow but the wall is 3 feet thick protecting what would have been the gin powder store.
From 1870 the Fort became an Abbey and the entrance assumed a more pious and circumspect defence, in the form of a 4 inch square gridded vison panel where a monk would examine visitors before admittance when he evertually responded to the knocker.

The Raven Wing was built in the 1950s as a Science block extension to the School. Notice the School Motif the entance door and the school house names in stained glass on the first landing. The building has been modernised and is now the warmest building in the Abbey with 18 apartments.
You can easily see to the left side if it, the remains of the last bastions of the original Fort Wall which was part of the Hanovarian Fort Design with the four pointed corners on the rectangluar shape, providing cannons and view points on all directions. This did not stop the Jacobites from capturing both Fort Geroge and Fort Augustus before their defeat at Culloden in 1946.
