The Monastery is arguably the most important part of the Abbey, even before it became such.
As part of the Fort Defending against Jacobite attack from the Loch, The defence bastions with cannons on either side were formidable. Conversely it's position also allowed the fort to be put under siege twice during the 45 rebellion.

Some people ask about the difference between Monastery and Abbey. The monastery is residence for monastic life, whereas the Abbey covers all parts as led by the Abbot. So facing the Loch with the cloister gardens to the rear it was ideal. No one could miss Mass with the bell tower above them. You can see it on the way up, at the top of the wide staircase to the first landing.
